Developing accessible content, a guide by NLS

logo for Neighborhood Legal Services w tagline Because Justice is For AllNeighborhood Legal Services (NLS) provides high-quality legal services and community legal education for those who are low-income and vulnerable in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, and Lawrence Counties.  FISA Foundation awarded funding to NLS to provide legal assistance to people with disabilities who needed help getting criminal records expunged.  This project was important to FISA because we know that many young people with disabilities come to the attention of law enforcement for behaviors associated with their disabilities.  This is particularly common for people of color who have invisible disabilities like autism, cognitive/intellectual disabilities, post-traumatic stress disorder and mental health conditions.
screenshot of Mocrosoft's Accessibility checker, showing identification of poor contrast and recommended action to correctAs part of the grant, NLS wanted to make sure its marketing, outreach and materials were accessible.  So the organization developed this Accessibility Guide by NLS to help its staff team anticipate and address common barriers like plain language, use of color/contrast, font and design.  NLS granted permission to FISA to post this guide to assist others in being more inclusive.
