A Century of Change: Milestones in the History of Intellectual Disability, 1900-2013

Did you know that only 50 years ago, nearly 200,000 people with intellectual disabilities lived in state-run institutions? These facilities were overcrowded and inhumane. As one former resident described, “It was like being in prison.” Thankfully, these kind of institutions are largely a thing of the past.
